Upper Eyelid Surgery Fort Myers
Upper and lower eyelid surgery, also referred to as “blepharoplasty,” is a cosmetic procedure designed to reverse the signs of eyelid aging by removing loose skin and excess fat. If you would like to refresh the look of your eyes, get in touch with Elmquist Eye Group in Fort Myers or Cape Coral.
What is Blepharoplasty?
As we age, gravity can pull the upper eyelid skin downward, creating extra creases and folds. Besides making us look older, severely sagging skin around the eyes can impair vision.
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes skin and adds or removes fat from the eyelids. To minimize visible scarring, tiny incisions are made along the natural skin lines of the eyelids.
Blepharoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic procedures in the U.S. today and can be done to improve:
- Drooping and sagging eyelids
- Puffiness in the lower eyelid area
- Lines and wrinkles
- Bags under the eyes
- Tired appearance
- Poor vision (in some cases)
Are You a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?
Men and women who have healthy facial tissue and muscles and realistic expectations from surgery are the best candidates for blepharoplasty. Most patients are over 35 years of age, but if your droopy eyelids are hereditary, you may decide to have eyelid surgery at a younger age.
How Long Does Recovery Take?
Most patients have minimal discomfort following the blepharoplasty procedure.
There may be temporary swelling and/or bruising around the eyes that lasts for 7 to 10 days. Pain and discomfort can be managed with medication. You may also experience some light sensitivity, tearing or blurry vision as you recover. While you can resume your normal routine within a few days, it is advisable to avoid strenuous activities for about two weeks.
Are the Results Long-Lasting?
The results of eyelid surgery last quite a long time, but blepharoplasty won’t stop your eyes from aging. Upper eyelid surgery often lasts a lifetime but some patients may need it repeated. Lower eyelid surgery rarely needs to be repeated.
