Eyewear Frames
We’ve all done it. We see frames that look great in the display case, but when we try them on, it’s a fashion disaster in the making. We will help you choose a frame style that compliments your face shape. To find your face shape, pull your hair away from your face and look in a mirror. Draw an imaginary line around your face. What shape is it?
There are actually seven primary face shapes:
- Oval: a face shape that has balanced proportions, so choose a frame that is as wide or wider than the broadest part of the oval.
- Heart: wider at the top, so choose frames that have a wider bottom to keep proportions
- Oblong: your face is longer than it is wide, so choose frames that are not so wide but that instead add depth to your face
- Square: people with square faces usually have broad foreheads and strong jawlines, and the face length and width are roughly the same proportion, so choose frames that are narrow and make your face appear longer
- Diamond: this face shape is narrow at both the forehead and the jawline, and the cheekbones are broad; this face shape is quite rare, but choose frames that are oval or cat-eye shapes to soften the cheekbones
- Round: this face shape has the same width and length proportions, and curved lines rather than angles, so choose frames that make the face appear longer and thinner
- Triangle: a triangle face has angles with a narrow forehead and wider chin areas, so choose frames that make the upper facial area look broader
Eyewear Lenses
Once we complete your vision exam, we will know exactly what lens correction you need, and we may recommend either single-vision or multi-vision lenses. Many of our patients find that single-vision lenses work well to correct their vision. Some have single-vision distance lenses for nearsightedness, while others use single-vision lenses for up close tasks like reading.
For people who have difficulty seeing up close and at long distance, bifocal lenses may be right for you. Bifocal lenses are very common too, since most people need to correct both near- and long-distance vision. We can actually combine two prescriptions into a single bifocal lens. The upper part of the lens corrects distance while the lower part helps correct up-close vision. These glasses work well, and you won’t have to carry around two pairs of glasses wherever you go.
A multifocal lens is also called a progressive lens because it consists of different prescriptions within the same pair of glasses. Having multifocal lenses makes it easier to see while driving, watching television and reading. A multifocal lens also works well for astigmatism, because it corrects vision at multiple distances.These lenses help with not only astigmatism, but also nearsightedness and presbyopia, a condition that affects people over age 40. With presybopia, you are not to be able to see small words clearly all at once.
