Best Eye Surgeons in Florida
Several eye conditions and diseases require surgery. In fact, eye surgery may not be something that you really think about. You may think that you’ll never need it, but it is a good idea to have a trusted eye doctor and surgeon who knows you and your eyes. Regular checkups are important, and if you do ever need eye surgery, you will have that relationship already established with Elmquist Eye Group. In southwest Florida, patients are fortunate to have the best eye surgeons in Florida at our Fort Myers and Cape Coral offices.
Cataract Surgery
Many of our Florida patients are over age 60 and suffer from cataracts, a condition that occurs as part of the natural aging process. If you have cataracts, you are not alone. In fact, more than 25 million Americans have cataracts. Cataracts keep growing and at some point significantly interfere with vision, and that is when you will need surgery to remove the cataract. Our Elmquist surgeons are board-certified surgeons who are specially trained in the latest bladeless laser cataract surgical techniques.
Vision Correction
Our surgeons can also perform the vision restoration surgery known as LASIK surgery, short for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis. At Elmquist, we use the bladeless custom LASIK procedure. This state-of-the-art procedure is a much safer alternative than older traditional forms of LASIK. In the bladeless custom LASIK surgery, the surgeon uses two lasers. The first laser is a femtosecond laser that the surgeon uses to create a corneal flap, thus exposing the cornea for vision correction. The second laser is an excimer laser that the surgeon uses to reshape the cornea. This reshaping is done according to a customized map of the surface of your eye, and the reshaping process corrects your refractive error and improves your vision.
At Elmquist, we typically can perform the surgery on patients over age 21 who have had a stable vision correction prescription for at least two years. Most people are candidates, but people with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes may not be candidates. We also do not recommend LASIK for pregnant women because of the eye changes that occur during pregnancy.
LASIK is a noninvasive outpatient procedure that only takes about 15 minutes to complete. Our surgeons can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and even astigmatism with the procedure.
Eyelid Surgeries
We can also perform a variety of cosmetic procedures on the eyelids. Eyelid surgery is referred to as blepharoplasty, and is more commonly known as an “eyelid tuck”. With age, both upper and lower eyelids can begin to droop. Sagging on the upper eyelid can be so extensive that the skin droop blocks vision. Both male and female patients have this procedure, and patients rave about their restored youthful appearances.
