Dr. E. Trevor Elmquist of the Elmquist Eye Group has developed an innovative, in-office spa therapy treatment for sufferers of blepharitis, a common eyelid disease. The Spa Scrubs treatment, performed by one of the skilled physicians in the Fort Myers office, provides relief and helps prevent eyelid infections.
Patients with blepharitis experience redness, itching or swelling along the edge of the eyelids. Patients sometimes get the sensation of something in their eye or experience dryness or a gritty sensation. There are small glands that secrete oily wax on the eyelids, and blepharitis can lead to these glands becoming infected. Blepharitis is generally treated with hygiene and warm compresses, but in more severe cases, additional treatment may be necessary.
During the Spa Scrubs treatment, the doctor carefully expresses the wax glands of the eyelids, which clears out any potential source of infection. The procedure is performed in a serene room, with low lighting and relaxing background music to make the patient feel at-ease. Included in the cost of the procedure is a take-home hygiene kit, which includes tools used during the procedure that are not available over the counter.
“Many of our patients who have undergone Spa Scrubs have experienced significant relief from their symptoms,” Dr. Elmquist said. “Blepharitis can be very unpleasant, but the Spa Scrubs treatment provides relief and gives our patients the knowledge and tools they need to alleviate their discomfort.”
