Common Vision Problems
The most common vision problems are refractive errors, in which the shape of the eye, the shape of the cornea, or the aging of the lens change the way light focuses on the retina. Most refractive errors can affect both children and adults, and include:
- Myopia – Also known as nearsightedness, people with this refractive error have difficulty seeing distant objects clearly. Myopia affects about 25% of Americans and can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or surgery.
- Hyperopia – Also known as farsightedness, most people with hyperopia have difficulty seeing close objects clearly; however, some people experience blurry vision for objects at any distance, near or far. Hyperopia affects 5 to 10% of Americans and can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or surgery.
- Astigmatism –This condition occurs when the cornea, which is normally shaped like a basketball, is curved more like a football. It can cause images to appear blurry and stretched out. It’s possible to have a mild case of astigmatism and not know it. Astigmatism can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or surgery.
- Presbyopia –This condition makes it difficult to focus up close, and typically occurs as we age. It is most common in adults over the age of 35. The simplest and safest way to correct presbyopia is with eyeglasses.
How Vision Problems Are Detected
Refractive errors can be found during a comprehensive dilated eye exam. The exam involves the dilation of the pupils with eye drops which gives your eye doctor a clear view of the tissues at the back of your eye, including the retina, the macula, and the optic nerve.
Other components of the comprehensive dilated eye exam include tonometry, which helps detect glaucoma, visual field tests that measure your peripheral (side) vision, and visual acuity tests that assess how well you see at different distances.
Even if you think your eyes are healthy, a comprehensive eye examination is the only way to be sure.
