Refractive cataract surgery is even better than basic cataract surgery! Rather than just replacing the clouded lens with a clear lens, the surgeon will implant a vision correction lens. These days, lens technology has advanced so much that surgeons can correct a range of vision issues including farsightedness, nearsightedness, and even astigmatism. So, if you’ve been thinking about refractive cataract surgery in Florida, come to Elmquist Eye Group.
So many benefits
You may not need vision correction, and if that is the case, standard cataract surgery is a good option. However, if you are like so many of our patients, you probably do need vision correction, and refractive cataract surgery is an excellent option.
Cataracts are a natural part of aging. As a person ages, a breakdown occurs in the natural eye proteins which begin to build up and clump onto the lens. Cataracts typically begin forming by age 60, and by age 75 may be significant enough to interfere with vision.
So many options
During your initial appointment and evaluation, we will determine whether you are a good refractive surgery candidate. Our fellowship-trained, board-certified cataract surgeons will then develop a customized vision correction plan to fit your unique needs. We frequently address cataracts in our over-40 patients, and the refractive changes (presbyopia) that occur with age. We implant toric lenses to correct astigmatism, and use multifocal lens implants to correct a combination of refractive issues. As long as you have no other eye disease, your lens implant should last forever with no need for additional surgeries.
Surgical expectations
Surgery is the only remedy for a cataract. We take customized eye measurements prior to surgery. Using a laser-assisted technique, the surgeon creates a small incision, breaks up and removes the cataract, and implants the new lens, which heals in place and requires no stitches. Very few patients have complications, but some experience dry eye or minor eye irritation for a couple of days.
We perform the surgery in our state-of-the-art outpatient facility. Cataract surgery is safe, effective, quick and painless. So many of our patients marvel afterwards and wish they had done it much sooner. After surgery, we will monitor you for about 30 minutes, then someone will drive you home to relax for the rest of the day.
