Six Common Eye Problems
Refractive Errors: Refractive errors – nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and presbyopia – re the most common cause of vision problems. Treatments for refractive errors include prescription glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery such as LASIK or PRK.
Cataracts: A cataract is clouding of the normally clear lens inside the eye. The most common cause is aging, but they may also be caused by injuries to the eye, medications, such as prednisone and corticosteroids, and by certain diseases, such as diabetes. Cataracts do not have to impair your vision forever; they can be treated with cataract surgery.
Diabetic Retinopathy: People with diabetes are 25 times more likely to lose vision than those who are not diabetic, and approximately 90% of them will develop diabetic retinopathy. You can avoid substantial vision loss with early diagnosis and treatment. Diabetic retinopathy can be treated with laser surgery to seal off leaking blood vessels in the retina and destroy new growth.
Macular Degeneration: Occurring more frequently in adults over 50, this is a leading cause of vision loss. Age-related macular degeneration is a loss of central vision but does not cause complete blindness. There are several treatment options that may prevent severe vision loss or slow the progression of the disease considerably.
Glaucoma: Glaucoma may not have any symptoms, but it is a leading cause of blindness in seniors. If you catch glaucoma early, it can be controlled. It is very important to have your eyes checked frequently as you age in order to prevent damage to your eyesight. Once detected, glaucoma can be treated with either surgery, lasers or eye drops.
Dry Eye: When the eye does not produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly to provide enough lubrication, you may suffer from dry eye, an often chronic problem in older adults. The condition may be easily controlled with artificial tears and medicated eye drops.
How to Keep Your Eyes Healthy
A comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to detect many common eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in their early stages.
Your eye doctor can also detect early signs of some conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or other problems, just by looking at the blood vessels in your eyes, your retinas and so on.
