You Have Lens Implant Choices

Dr. Yasaira Rodriguez specializes in advanced lens replacement. Once you decide to have cataract surgery, you will have a choice to replace your clouded lens with either a traditional single-focus lens or an advanced multiple-focus lens implant ( multifocal IOL ) that provides a fuller range of vision.

Vision After Cataract Surgery

Older-style lens implants provide clear vision at a single focus point, usually in the distance. Newer lens implants provide a fuller range of vision, improving your sight at a fuller range of near, intermediate and distance objects. Most patients who choose this lens type for their surgery do so because they’d like to be free of glasses the majority of their day.

Until recently, cataract patients had few choices of implants used to restore their vision after cataract surgery. With the advanced lens implants offered at Elmquist Eye Group, you now have choices based on your individual visual needs and lifestyle.

See Near through Far

Full Range Vision with Multifocal Lens Implants

The PanOptix IOL, Synergy IOL and Vivity IOL are available for Elmquist Eye Group patients in Ft. Myers and Cape Coral, Florida. Following a thorough cataract evaluation with Dr. Rodriguez, one of these advanced lens implants may be chosen to replace your eye’s clouded lens ( cataract ) during cataract surgery. In addition to restoring clear vision after cataract surgery, multifocal lens implants also treat presbyopia, or difficulty focusing up-close due to aging eyes.

PanOptix, Synergy and Vivity multifocal lenses provide good vision at all distances. The Synergy lens has the closest near point of all the multifocals, while both PanOptix and Vivity have patented technology that reduces glare and halos, and delivers improved contrast sensitivity compared to other lens implants.

One Step Astigmatism Correction

Distance Vision & Astigmatism Correction with Toric Lens Implants

Astigmatism is a condition where the cornea is shaped more like a football, rather than round like a basketball. The irregular shape causes light rays to scatter when entering the eye, resulting in blurry vision instead of providing a single focal point. There are two ways we correct astigmatism during cataract surgery. The preferred method is implanting a Toric IOL, a lens implant specifically designed to correct astigmatism, to replace your cataract. If your astigmatism does not fall within the treatable range for a Toric lens implant, your surgeon may choose to also perform Limbal Relaxing Incisions. In this procedure, performed at the same time as cataract surgery, your surgeon will make a precisely positioned, tiny surgical incision. This is a self-sealing technique, so no stitches are needed. After the LRI procedure, the cornea’s shape is rounded, reducing your dependence on glasses after surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Causes Cataracts?

While aging is the most common cause, cataracts can also result from eye injuries, certain medications, and prolonged exposure to sunlight. Medical conditions such as diabetes can speed up their development. Lifestyle habits like smoking may also increase risk. Knowing your risk factors helps you be proactive about eye health and plan for treatment when it becomes necessary.

What are the first signs of having cataracts?

At first, the cloudiness in your vision caused by a cataract may affect only a small part of the eye’s lens. You may not notice any vision loss. As the cataract grows larger, it clouds more of your lens. More clouding changes the light passing through the lens. This may lead to more noticeable symptoms, such as glare or halos when driving at night and increased sun sensitivity.

Cataract Treatment Options

Once a cataract forms, it cannot be reversed with medication, diet, or glasses. The only proven treatment is surgical removal of the cloudy lens and replacement with a clear, artificial lens. At Elmquist Eye Group, cataract surgery is performed with advanced technology, including laser-assisted techniques for added precision. These options allow us to tailor your treatment to your eyes, vision goals, and lifestyle.

Cataract Surgery Recovery

Cataract surgery is a quick, outpatient procedure that replaces your cloudy lens with a clear implant in under 15 minutes. You’ll be awake but comfortable, and most people see better within a couple of days.
