What is an Optometrist?

An optometrist is an eye doctor who has earned the Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree. Although they are not medical doctors (MDs), they must pass rigorous tests to become licensed by the state in which they intend to practice optometry.

Kate Wagner, OD, and Nina Burt, OD, part of the skilled Elmquist Eye Group team, have both been board certified by the State of Florida and the National Board of Optometry.

Optometrists provide primary vision care that ranges from eye tests and vision correction, and can diagnose and treat a broad range of medical conditions that impact the eye, including glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal disease and ocular disorders associated with diabetes and high blood pressure. They are licensed to prescribe medications, counsel patients about surgical and non-surgical treatment options, and perform certain surgical procedures.

For most day-to-day eye and vision care needs, an optometrist will generally be your best choice. Optometrists conduct most routine eye examinations and refractions, and regularly treat problems that affect the surface of the eye, such as allergies, irritations, eyestrain, and conjunctivitis. They also prescribe medications for certain eye conditions, including antibiotics for infections.

If you have a serious vision problem or need eye surgery, they will refer you to an ophthalmologist, such as Dr. Elmquist or Dr. Eccles-Brown, for a more detailed examination or ongoing treatment.

At Elmquist Eye Group, you can rest assured that you will receive state-of-the-art treatment from the top optometrists and ophthalmologist in Southwest Florida in a comfortable, friendly and high tech environment. Call us at (239) 936-2020 to find out more about our services.
