What Optometrists Do
Optometrists in Florida are licensed to prescribe and fit glasses and contact lenses, prescribe some medications, and perform minor surgical procedures. They perform vision tests, diagnose and treat many eye conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal diseases, and are trained to detect systemic diseases that may manifest in the eyes, such as diabetes. They also perform the majority of comprehensive eye exams in the U.S.
Every optometrist who is certified by the Florida Board of Optometry must meet the minimum requirements for safe practice. Dr. Kate Wagner and Dr. Nina Burt are both board certified by the Florida Board of Optometry and the National Board of Optometry.
Dr. Wagner graduated with honors from Nova Southeastern College of Optometry. Prior to joining Elmquist Eye Group as a partner, Dr. Wagner was a Captain in the U.S. Army and was deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom, where she treated service men and women and local civilians at a clinic north of Baghdad.
Dr. Burt graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Union University in Jackson, TN, and completed her optometry degree at Fort Lauderdale’s Nova Southeastern University, graduating with honors. Dr. Burt has lived in such diverse locations as South Africa and Brazil.
The Importance of Comprehensive Eye Exams
Everyone in the family, including young children, should have their eyes examined regularly. It’s important to find eye and vision problems early when they are easier to treat.
A comprehensive dilated eye exam is often the only way to detect conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration which may have no symptoms in the early stages. With early detection, these conditions can be treated, reducing your risk of vision loss.
We may use medicated eye drops to dilate your pupils, opening them wider so that we can see the back part of your eye, including the retina and blood vessels. Your vision will temporarily be blurry, and you may have trouble focusing your eyes. We recommend that you bring a friend or family member to drive you home after your examination.
