Comprehensive Eye Exam
Regular comprehensive eye exams are important. They are often the only way to detect conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration that often have no symptoms in the early stages. With early detection, these conditions can be treated, reducing your risk of vision loss.
The following vision tests help us evaluate different aspects of your vision:
Visual acuity test: This test utilizes a chart with rows of letters that decrease in size, beginning with a large E at the top. It helps us measure your distance vision and near vision.
Refraction: Refraction refers to the way light waves are bent as they pass through your cornea and lens. It can tell us whether you are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism. You will look through a device that holds many lenses so we can determine which combination of lenses gives you the sharpest vision.
Retinoscopy: This is another test that enables us to estimate your eyeglass prescription by determining the way light reflects off of your eye when we shine a light into it.
Visual field test: A visual field test may be another component of your comprehensive eye exam. It is used to detect potential blind spots in the eye caused by diseases like glaucoma.
Slit-lamp exam: This exam gives us a magnified view of the inner and outer structures of your eye including the eyelids, conjunctiva, iris, lens, sclera, and cornea, and helps us detect eye problems at an early stage.
Glaucoma test: A puff of air is used to calculate the intraocular pressure in your eye. High eye pressure may be a sign of glaucoma.
