Cataract Treatment Fort Myers
Although most cataracts are related to aging, you don’t have to be a senior citizen to get one. For cataract treatment in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, or elsewhere in Lee County, schedule an evaluation with Dr. Trevor Elmquist, one of America’s Top Doctors in ophthalmology.
Elmquist Eye Group has been serving Southwest Florida for more than 23 years. Dr. Elmquist and his highly skilled associates, including Dr. Kate Wagner; partner, Dr. Nina Burt, and Dr. Sarah Eccles-Brown, provide a comprehensive range of eye care services, from routine eye exams for glasses to bladeless laser-assisted cataract surgery, and have the expertise to care for anyone in your family, from children to seniors.
What is a Cataract?
A cataract is the clouding of the normally clear lens in your eye. The cloudiness makes it difficult for light to pass through the lens to the retina and results in distorted or blurred vision, glare, or difficulty seeing in poor lighting conditions.
The most common cause of cataracts is aging, and over 24.5 million Americans aged 40 and older are affected by them. However, cataracts can also be caused by a traumatic eye injury, by excessive exposure to ultraviolet light, by the use of some medications, such as prednisone and corticosteroids, and by certain diseases, such as diabetes. Cataracts worsen slowly over time, but cataract surgery can correct the problem.
When Should Cataracts Be Removed?
Cataracts can develop in one eye or both eyes, but they do not spread from one eye to the other. If Dr. Elmquist determines that a cataract is the cause of your vision problems, nothing needs to be done until you feel that it is affecting the quality of your life.
As the cataract worsens and activities like driving, reading and working on the computer become more difficult, you may decide it’s time to have it surgically removed. You are never too old to have cataract surgery!
Cataracts can only be treated with surgery to replace the clouded lens of the eye. The natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens with little to no discomfort, and vision is usually restored within days.
Cataract surgery is a highly successful procedure, but it is important to understand that complications can occur during or after surgery, some severe enough to limit vision. As with any surgery, a good result cannot be guaranteed.
