What is All-Laser LASIK?
LASIK is the most technologically advanced option for reducing your dependency on glasses or contact lenses.
First, a flap must be cut in the cornea to enable the surgeon to access the inner corneal tissue. Traditionally, this was done with a handheld instrument, called a microkeratome, which contains a metal blade.
Thanks to the state-of-the-art all-laser LASIK technique, the surgeon is able to create a very precise corneal flap with cool energy from a Femtosecond laser beam. This allows for greater corneal stability and the treatment of higher levels of correction. It also lowers the risks associated with a metal blade passing through the surface of the eye.
The surgeon then gently lifts the flap and uses the beams of an Excimer laser to reshape the cornea according to the unique requirements of your eyes. This alters the way light rays enter your eye and improves their ability to focus. The flap is placed back in its normal position and smoothed to remove any bubbles or wrinkles. It will heal itself quickly without any need for stitches.
All-laser LASIK surgery is quick and painless, and the entire procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes. After surgery, any minor discomfort you feel can be alleviated with artificial tears and a good night’s sleep. Most people are able to drive and return to work and a normal exercise routine within 24 to 48 hours.
Why Board Certification Matters
LASIK surgery is extremely safe. However, to ensure the best results, it’s important to be sure that your surgeon is board certified to perform this type of surgery.
To become board certified, a doctor must spend several years in supervised training following medical school. He or she must then pass an exam that assesses his or her medical knowledge and clinical judgment in a particular specialty or subspecialty.
Because any doctor can claim to be board certified, it’s important to verify his or her credentials with Certification Matters which is operated by the American Board of Medical Specialties, the umbrella organization for 24 individual specialty boards.
When you find a surgeon you like and decide to undergo LASIK surgery, we will perform a comprehensive evaluation of your eyes to test for corneal thickness, pupil size, refractive error, astigmatism, etc., and the surgeon will make a final determination about your candidacy for surgery.
